Welcome to the Official Moon Pool Mermaids Mod Wiki!

Up to date for v1.0.0. Somewhere on a tropical island lies a hidden grotto with a pool open to the sky: the Moon Pool. Stand in its water on a full-moon night and the moon gives you a locket that answers to you alone. Carry it, and ten seconds after water touches you – the sea, a pool, even the rain – you have a tail. You stay a mermaid until you are completely dry again.

A free fan mod inspired by H2O: Just Add Water and Mako: Island of Secrets. No other mods required.

The Moon Pool

Moon Pools hide on the shallow shelves of tropical islands – about one tropical island in four, and never more than one per island. A typical world has around seven within 20 km of spawn, the nearest usually 3 to 9 km out, so pack for a sea voyage.

From the outside it just looks like a rocky island. Find the way in and you come out beside a pool of water under an opening to the night sky, lit by glowing crystals. A mermaid can skip the climb and swim straight in through the underwater tunnel.

  • New terrain only. Moon Pools generate in terrain created after the mod is installed. On an existing world, sail past the edge of what you have already explored.
  • How rare is set in Pool.json (CellSizeBlocks: bigger is rarer). See the Config.
  • Admins can list the Moon Pools a world has found with /moonpool pool list and /moonpool pool nearest. The vanilla /locate prefab MoonPool.Grotto also lists spots where a pool was considered but never built, so trust /moonpool pool instead.

The full moon and the lockets

Hytale’s moon runs through its phases over five in-game days, so a full moon comes every fifth night. The ritual only works while the full moon is high, from 9 PM to 3 AM in-game (about twelve real minutes at vanilla day length).

Stand in the Moon Pool’s water and the moonlight pours down the shaft. After a few seconds a locket appears in your inventory: a silver locket with a blue, clear or red stone, chosen by the moon.

  • Bound to you. A locket answers only to the player who received it. Someone else’s locket does nothing for you, and its tooltip says whose it is.
  • Lost it? Come back to a Moon Pool at the next full moon for a new one with the same stone. The new locket makes every older copy go dark.
  • One claim per full moon. A player who already carries their live locket is told the moon has nothing more to give. Claims are also at least 60 real minutes apart, across every world.
  • Players without a locket are told in chat when a full moon is coming, and again when it is high.
  • Lockets drop on death the way the server’s other items do.

The transformation

Carry your own locket anywhere in your inventory, and the moment water touches you the countdown starts:

  1. Water touches you – swimming, wading, or rain and snow under the open sky. A shimmer and a sound start a ten-second countdown.
  2. Ten seconds later you have your tail, even if you have stepped back onto land, as long as you are still wet.
  3. In the water you get a swim boost and never run out of breath.
  4. On land you are beached: slower, with lower jumps, until you are completely dry – about thirty seconds in shade or at night, quicker in full sun or next to lava, fire or a burning campfire. Rain keeps you wet.

Chest and leg armor are hidden while you have a tail so the scale top and the locket show. It is purely visual: the armor still protects you. Players in creative mode do not transform, and dying as a mermaid puts you back in human form.

Every timing is configurable in Transform.json. See the Config.

Mermaid or merman

Pick your tail freely and change it whenever you like. The choice is saved and applies the next time water finds you.

TailCommandLook
Mermaid tail/moonpool tail mermaidBronze-orange scales, a broad crescent fluke and a matching scale top.
Merman tail/moonpool tail mermanBlue scales deepening to navy, a pointed fluke, and no scale top.

The merman tail keeps your own underwear top unless you say otherwise with /moonpool tail top off (or on). That one applies at once, even mid-swim.

Both tails come with a full set of swim and land animations.

Your locket in human form

While you carry your own locket you wear it at your throat, over your clothes, in your stone’s color. It goes away about a second after the locket leaves your inventory, and comes back as soon as you pick it up again. With a tail, the tail carries it.

It stays hidden under visible chest armor, under the few tops too bulky for it (a chest plate costume, a high collar, a bow tie and the like), and while another mod is changing your look. /moonpool info says which.

For server owners: this works by giving locket holders a mod-built copy of the vanilla player model (id MoonPool_Human_Locket) carrying every cosmetic of their skin plus the locket. A mod that only acts on players whose model is the vanilla Player will see locket holders as changed. ShowLocketInHumanForm in Transform.json turns it off.

Compatibility

Moon Pool Mermaids needs no other mod. It can run next to Mermaids and Mythical Creatures: when both are installed, any player Mermaids can transform is left to Mermaids, and the locket does nothing for them.

Designed for Hytale Update 7 (Server 0.7.2 and later 0.7.x).

Known limitations

  • Moon Pools only appear in terrain generated after the mod is installed.
  • With Mermaids and Mythical Creatures installed, Mermaids takes priority for any player it can transform.
  • English only for now.

Where to get it

Moon Pool Mermaids is a free fan work: never sold, never paywalled. H2O: Just Add Water and Mako: Island of Secrets belong to Jonathan M. Shiff Productions and their other rights holders, who do not endorse or sponsor this project. Every model, texture and line of text in the mod is original.
