Mermaid

The Mermaid is the original transformation of the Mermaids mod, and it’s still the flagship creature the mod is named after.

What it does

  • Transforms the player into a Mermaid whenever they enter water (the default behavior, controlled by the Transformation-Mode config option). Only water counts – lava, tar, poison and slime never do.
  • Grows the Curve Tail in place of legs, while keeping the player’s own skin, hair and cosmetics – including Wardrobe cosmetics.
  • Gives increased swim speed and water breathing while underwater, and night vision so mermaids can see in deep or dark water.
  • Slows the player down while walking on land as a mermaid (this can be toggled by a server admin).
  • Can optionally glow underwater, making it easier for the player (and nearby players) to see in dark water. The glow radius is configurable.
  • Some blocks (like mud or a cauldron) and rain can optionally trigger a transformation, if enabled by a server admin.
  • Sings the Siren Song with /mermaids song: nearby foes are held in place, nearby players get a regeneration buff, and sea life is drawn in.
  • Can share air with nearby players with /mermaids air.
  • Can optionally dry out on land. Off by default.

The Curve Tail

New in 4.0.0, the Curve Tail is every mermaid’s tail: a sleek, curved, tapering tail with a full fluke, built to Hytale’s style and light on the client. It has an animation for every player animation – a real dolphin kick in the water (swim, sprint, dive, hover, float, sink, breach), seal-style crawling, bounding and resting on land, and sitting, sleeping, riding, climbing and falling that all fit a tail.

Pick it from the Model tab of the mermaid menu (/mermaids), in three styles that share every animation and fin:

Tail:Look:
Curve TailThe classic curve, with a full fan fluke.
Curve Veil TailA flowing, scalloped fan fin with small round scales and a soft sheen.
Curve Swift TailA deep-forked, swept-back fin like a tuna’s, with pointed scales, a dark flank stripe and dark-tipped lobes.

Your color carries over when you switch between them.

Fins, Colors and Presets

Thirteen fins were made for the Curve Tail. They move with you: they trail every kick, flutter while you idle, and fold back at speed.

Slot:Fins:
DorsalCrest Fin, Ridge Spines, Long Sail, Twin Crest, Plume
PectoralHip Fans, Sweep Fins, Frill Fins, Wing Fins, Streamers
EarFan Ears, Spine Ears, Frill Ears

The tail comes in eight colors – orange, pink, purple, rose, lime, blue, aqua and cyan – and the fins always match it. Mermaids Premium adds 215 more.

Six ready-made presets put a whole look on in one click: Default, Full Fins, Sea Dragon, Reef Frills, Veil Dancer and Swift Hunter. Under My Presets you can also save up to 8 looks of your own – tail, color, fins, shimmer and companion – by name, and re-apply them any time (or use /mermaids preset save|delete|list).

Shimmers and Companions

  • Shimmer – a band of light that drifts up your tail for as long as you have it. The base mod ships Cyan and Pearl; Premium adds 24 more.
  • Companion – a fish that swims in while you are a mermaid in the water, follows you, and swims off when you leave. It cannot be hurt or killed, and it leaves when you stop being a mermaid. The base mod ships the Clownfish and the Blue Tang; Premium adds 18 more.

Both are switched on per player in the mermaid menu’s Player Settings, and can be switched off for the whole server in the Mermaids Config.

Store Tails

New in 4.0.0: three tails that go far beyond a fish tail, each a $4 one-time purchase. They are cosmetic only – no stats, no gameplay advantage – and every one has its own animation for every player animation, its own signature color, and the 8 free colors.

Tail:What it is:
Octopus TailEight curling arms in place of a fish tail, which step along on land and curl as you swim. Signature color Octopus Red, with two cosmetics of its own: the Arm Web (Back tab) and the flapping Dumbo Ears (Ear tab).
Manta TailWide wing-fins spreading from the hips and a thin whip tail. You swim with a slow wing-flap instead of a kick, and on land the wings drape flat on the ground. Signature color Manta Midnight.
Seahorse TailA curled, gripping tail covered in leafy streamers, like a leafy sea dragon. On land you crawl with the tail laid flat behind you, and wading is a springy hop. Signature color Seahorse Gold.

A purchase is bound to the Hytale account you sign in with at the store, and works on any server running Mermaids 4.0.0 or newer – there is nothing to download and no username to type. Everyone sees the three tails in a Treasure Pavilion section of the Model tab, locked with a store link until they own one. Servers pick up purchases automatically within a few hours; /mermaids store lists the tails you own, and /mermaids store recheck checks sooner (a brand-new purchase can still take a few minutes to appear).

A server owner can switch store tails off entirely in the Store Config; anyone wearing one then goes back to the Curve Tail, with their saved looks kept.

The Mermaid Trident

New in 4.0.0, a Mithril-tier spear forged beneath the waves: stab up close, or charge it and throw it.

  • Hold it in the water for the Tide effect: faster swimming for as long as it is in your hand.
  • Its attacks move only your arms, so every tail keeps its own pose, and while you swim forward it strikes along your line of travel.
  • Crafted at the Mermaids Workbench on its Weapon tab: 6 Mithril Ingots, 3 Storm Leather, 4 Mermaid Scales and 1 Mermaid Tear.

The Seashell Bra

Redesigned in 4.0.0: two ribbed scallop shells on a twisted seaweed cord, knotted at the back, with a pearl clasp. It comes in ten dyes, crafted at the Mermaids Workbench, and is also a Wardrobe cosmetic when the Wardrobe mod is installed.

The Original Tails

The tails from before 4.0.0 – the original Mermaid Tail in eight colors and the Mammal Tail in orca and dolphin, with their eight fins, presets and animations – now live in the free Mermaids v2 Tails addon. Install it beside Mermaids to pick them from the Model tab again.

Updating from 3.x? The first time you join on 4.0.0, a mermaid on one of the original tails is moved to the Curve Tail, keeping their color (orange stays orange; orca and dolphin become black and grey; any Premium color keeps its exact shade). Fins from the original set have no Curve version, so they come off – pick new ones from the fin tabs. Saved presets are converted the same way. If the addon that supplied a tail is ever removed, its wearers fall back to the Curve Tail instead of an error.

Wild Mermaids

Custom Mermaid NPCs spawn out in the ocean, in pods that mix six colors – including orca and dolphin mermaids – spread across the Curve, Veil and Swift tails, each with its own fins. See the NPC gallery.

Drying Out

A mermaid out of water is a fish out of water – if a server admin enables it.

With drying out turned on, standing on land drains a meter shown above the hotbar, the mirror image of the vanilla breath bar underwater. Once it empties the player starts taking damage until they find water again, and touching any water refills the meter. It can kill, so it is off by default; an admin can also set the damage to zero and keep it as pure flavor.

Everything about it is tunable – how long it takes to dry out, how fast water refills it, how much it hurts, and whether it only applies while actually transformed. See the Drying Out section of the config page.

How to become a Mermaid

Pick Mermaid as your active form in the Mythical Creatures menu (/mc), then simply enter the water. Server admins can change how the transformation is reached with the Mermaid Transformation-Mode:

  • 0 (default) – transform when entering water.
  • 1 – transform only with a Mermaid potion or while carrying the Mermaid Pendant. Small, Medium and Large potions last 5 minutes, 15 minutes and 48 hours; see Potions.
  • 2 – transform when entering water, with potions and the Pendant switched off.

See the Commands, Config, and Permissions pages for the full list of Mermaid-specific options.
